"Lieutenant Mathews reporting in sir."
Kirk smiled, he had always like good entrances and this one was one of the best he had seen. Getting Kirk approached the Lieutenant.
"Sir, our pre-launch check list is now completed. The testing of the site to site transporters was the final item on the list."
"Good," Kirk said, "Now Lieutenant you are here because you have been selected to be Mr. McLean's Assistant Chief Engineer. Your also going to be working on the bridge at the engineering station, how does that sound?"
Mathews was a bit shocked, he had no idea of what was going on, "Sounds great sir, thank you."
"Don't thank me, thank Commander McLean, he is the one who selected you. Commander, if you would show him to his stations."
"Aye sir." McLean said motioning towards the empty chair on the right hand side of the Captain's chair.

Kirk decided to leave the engineers to their own devices as he took some final checks from each of the stations. Once all the stations checked in he looked over to the Ensign at the Security and Tactical Station.
"Ensign, report."
"Sir, Utopia Planitia informs us that all of their technicians have reported back to their respective locations on the dry dock. We are cleared to depart."
"Thank you Ensign," Kirk said walked up next to the Helm and OPS station, "Helm, take us out one quarter impulse power."
"Aye sir. Docking clamps disengaged, clearing all moorings, thrusters at full power," The helmsman informed pushing more buttons, "One quarter impulse power."
On the view screen Kirk and the rest of the bridge watched as the long metal arms of the dry dock began to disappear behind them as they cleared each section.
"Sir, we are clear of the dry dock." Reported the helmsman.
"Good. Set course for Deep Space Beta, warp 9."
"Aye sir, warp 9," the helmsman repeated as he finished punching in the coordinates, "Course plotted sir."
"Engage." Kirk said sitting back in his chair.
Outside the ship the whine of the warp field building up came to a peak sending the Darkhawk racing into the distance leaving a single flash of light as she broke the light speed barrier for the first time.

Lorian couldn't help but smile as he realized that this was the first time the Darkhawk broke the light barrier. He had never done this before and he felt a sense of pride as the Captain said engage.
One of the best upgrades that the Darkhawk had that no other Defiant Class ship had was a seat for the XO. Lorian didn't really care, but those seats did make your rear in feel like it was in heaven.
There was silence on the bridge. Everyone was taking in the sight, feeling, and emotion of the first inagrual flight of the Darkhawk.
"Captain I know that you got a communication from Headquarters, was it something serious?" Lorian asked of Captain Kirk.

"Captain I know that you got a communication from Headquarters, was it something serious?" Lorian asked of Captain Kirk.
"Not serious, number one, but disturbing. It seems that Starfleet might be stretching a bit far. Although Deep Space Beta is fully functional, we are going to be it's main line of starship defense. Starfleet does have two Akira Class ships already in the Beta Quadrant but they are assigned to patrol and defend their own construction sites," Kirk said exhaling heavily, "That leaves us out there alone to do exploration, and assist defensively as the other ships need it."
"Just three ships?" Commander Smith said sounding very shocked.
"Yes just three. I was just as shocked to find out as you are. I would have thought that Starfleet would be placing a decent amount of its resources into this project. I was told though that the Beta Exploration Fleet should be formed and heading our way in a matter of months." Kirk said not sounding every enthusiastic about the last part.
"Helm, what is our ETA to Deep Space Beta?" Kirk asked.
"At our current speed four days, twelve hours."
"Looks like we have a ways to go." Kirk said to Commander Smith.

"...Commander, if you would show him to his stations." Kirk said.
"Aye sir." McLean said motioning towards the empty chair on the right hand side of the Captain's chair.
"Have a seat Lieutenant."
Mathews sat down at the engineering station and began looking over everything. It became clear to McLean his selection was a good one. Mathews was running through the interface much faster than McLean could have.
"It looks like your already very familiar with this interface." McLean said.
"Yes sir. On board my last ship we used this same interface in engineering. The Chief Engineer at the time decided he would rather be on the bridge, so this is an honor for me sir."
McLean never liked the idea of taking the Chief Engineer out of engineering. He once said, Who would keep the ship together if the Chief was on the bridge sipping tea?
As the Darkhawk McLean kept close eyes on the warp field and the anti-matter reaction rates to make sure they remained in the green.
"Looks like everything is looking good Captain."
"That is good new Cheif." Kirk said looking McLean's way.
"I have got Lieutenant Mathews settled in here. If you need me I will be in engineering."

"I have got Lieutenant Mathews settled in here. If you need me I will be in engineering."
"Understood Commander."
Kirk would have much rather had McLean on the bridge at all times but when it came to engineers Kirk found out the hard way that they need to be able do as they wish. Engineers are a strange breed but they are the life force of any ship. With out them the ship will sink.
-----------Deep Space Beta---------------
Kirk sat back in his chair and exhaled loudly when Deep Space Beta finally came on the view screen. It had been a long five days of checking and rechecking systems, testing weapons, and the cloaking device. Although this ship was better equipped as far as quarterer's were concerned he couldn't wait to fall into his own bed on the station. He like everybody else on the ship was looking forward to the time off as soon as they docked with Deep Space Beta.
"Open a channel." Kirk ordered.
"Channel open sir." Reported the helmsman.
"This is Captain Kirk of the USS Darkhawk to Deep Space Beta."
<Tag Captain Caspian>
"It's good to finally meet you Captain." Kirk replied taking a second to begin formalities, "We have yet to receive our docking clearance, I was hoping you could help us out with that."
<Tag Captain Caspian>
"Understood. Kirk out."
"That wasn't as friendly as I thought it was going to be." Kirk said turning his head towards Commander Smith, "Ms. Anderson , please take us in and dock at the appointed docking site. One quarter impulse power."
"Aye sir, one quarter impulse power."
After the Darkhawk docked at the assigned docking port the entire crew made for the airlock in one single mad dash. Kirk decided it would be best to arrange his personal items in his ready room before boarding the station.
After the unfriendly encounter with the base commander Kirk was not looking forward to meeting with the man, let along working with him for long hours of the day. It didn't take Kirk very long to figure out what Captain Caspian's issue could be, it was simple and it came in the nature of four pips on the collar.
Stepping onto the Command and Base Operations center Kirk noticed the room had a striking resemblance to the OPS center on DS9. Kirk had heard rumors that Chief Miles O'Brien had a huge hand in the designs of these new space stations, but it seemed he really took to the Cardassian designs of DS9.
Kirk stepped up the Base Commander's office and walked in with out ringin in first.
"Captain Caspian, it's good to meet you face to face now." Kirk said standing in the door way.

I decided to just throw Ms. Anderson into the mix. Hope you do not mind it too much.

Malachi relaxed as the Klingon left his Command deck. He was excited at the prospect of this mission but less than excited at the prospect of a constant ego battle with his new First Officer.
Caspian was just about to head to his office and go through the personnel files when a hail came through.
"On screen." Malachi ordered.
The image flickered and the Bridge of a small vessel appeared on screen. The image, however, was filled with the face of her Commanding Officer. Another person Malachi was less than happy to meet.
=^= This is Captain Kirk of the USS Darkhawk to Deep Space Beta =^=
"Captain... Kirk? Was it? I have yet to read your Starfleet personnel file although I am sure it will be very interesting indeed." Malachi had of course read Kirk's file but he liked to play it this way for a while. "Welcome to Deep Space Beta, Captain." Malachi said coldly.
=^= It's good to finally meet you Captain." Kirk replied taking a second to begin formalities, "We have yet to receive our docking clearance, I was hoping you could help us out with that =^=
"Well, Starfleet has ordered us to keep Docks closed for now, but I'm sure we can make an excpetion for you Captain." Malachi said sarcastically. "You are cleared to dock at Port 4, A section."
=^= Understood. Kirk out =^=
Malachi could tell he had stunned some of the officers on Command with his rudeness but he couldn't care less.
"Inform Commander Ko'Vor I would like a word with him in my office as soon as possible." Malachi said before leaving Command for the sanctuary of his office.
He began to rifle through padds and padds of officers names, trying to locate the key personnel. Starfleet were hardly organised for this project.
Just as Malachi was pouring himself another mug of tea. The office doors slid open and Kirk walked in. This angered Malachi no end.
"Captain." Kirk said offering his hand. "It's good to finally meet you face to face."
Caspian purposefully ignored the outstretched arm and motioned to the door.
"Did no one ever tell you it is rude to enter someone's office with out knocking?" Caspian said coldly.
<TAG Kirk>
Just at that moment Commander Ko'Vor entered the room.
"Another officer who seems unable to knock. Well come in Commander, you may as well meet the Captain of the Darkhawk now. Captain Jonathan Kirk meet Commander Ko'Vor of the Klingon Militia, serving as my FO."

"Did no one ever tell you it is rude to enter someone's office with out knocking?" Caspian said coldly.
"Captain, my patience with you is growing thin. We have been assigned as your primary defense force, the least you could do is show us some respect." Kirk said stepping in closer to make his point.
Moments before Kirk could really begin to lay down the law another person entered the office behind him.
"Another officer who seems unable to knock. Well come in Commander, you may as well meet the Captain of the Darkhawk now. Captain Jonathan Kirk meet Commander Ko'Vor of the Klingon Militia, serving as my FO."
Kirk took a step back and locked arms with the Klingon at the tradition point of shake, just beflow the elbow on the forearm.
"It is an honor to meeet you Commander. I have served with more than one brave Klingon during my time with Starfleet. I look forward to working very close with you." Kirk said trying to make a good impression with him.

Scott made his way from the Darkhawk to his assigned quarters. He was more than happy to finally be out of the crampted quarters on board the Darkhawk. They are nicer than the standard quarters, he thought to himself.
Once Scott was settled in he decided it would be time to get himself aquainted with the rest of the station since he was going to be working on both the station and the Darkhawk as Chief Engineer. He knew it would be alot of work, but he prefered his work to anything else. His marriage was on the rocks due to his age and lack of promotons.
As he walked around he thought about his wife, the times they might have together on the station. I really hope she likes it here.
Making his way to the Command Center Scott began to look around and get himself used to operations and the Command Center. This has Cardassian written all over it, Scotty thought to himself as he went through the consoles. He looked up at the Station Commander's office and noticed Captain Kirk and a Klingon were in the office talking.
I'll just wait until they are done, Scott thought as he went back to checking systems at the OPS station.

'Ah, an officer who knows how to show respect to a klingon. I hear you were allowed to dock? interesting. I was not. Good to meet you captain, we will have to share blood wine at some point.' 'It would be an, honour, commander.' Kirk responded, feeling his attempt at a first impression went well he went slightly red.
Ko'vor stepped towards Caspian. looking him firm in the eye he said;
'There is no need to be aggravated sir, you summoned me and i came. if there is a pro...'
Ko'Vor stopped. seeing the look on Caspian's face steadily getting more tense he realised it was still not a good time for a confrontation. Caspian probably had reasons for his way of acting so for now Ko'Vor was going to grin and bare it for as long as he could.
'I apologise, it is not my place to question my commanding officers motives. But bare in mind, both me and Captain Kirk are here to serve you, we don’t have to be.' Ko'Vor decided to leave it at that for now.
'Now, Captain, what have I been summoned for, if i may ask?' Ko'Vor waited...

Malachi tried hard not to laugh. All this honour rubbish was already driving him insane.
"Now, Captain, what have I been summoned for, if i may ask?" Ko'Vor asked.
Malachi looked at his new FO and smiled, however his eyes remained quiet, there was no sign of a smile there.
"Well you are right Commander. It is not your place to question my motives, one bit. And trust me, you may not have to be here to serve and protect and I would prefer it if you weren't." He smiled falsely again. "Now, I'm sure we all understand where we stand. Captain Kirk, it has been enlightening to speak with you but I am afraid I must speak to my First Officer now so if you wouldn't mind?"
<TAG Captain Kirk>
"Indeed, well remember next time you wish to enter my office please ring the chime, or at least knock." Malachi turned towards Ko'Vor not giving Kirk a chance to respond.
"Right Commander. I need you to begin your duties immediately. A Klingon Frigate will be arriving within the hour so I wish you to help with the cargo loads, just oversee everything. Is that understood?" Caspian asked.

'you want me to oversee a routine procedure? I thought your Starfleet had people to do that, positions for such things? for instance the maintenance staff? How can you ask me to do such a demeaning job? I am better suited elsewhere! like on the command deck! I am insulted by your lack of respect and confidence in my abilities. if you were klingon I would strike you down.'
Ko'vor snorted and carried on
'You have seen my service record and seen what I’m capable of. why give me this task?'
<tag Caspian>
'fine. I will do my duty for now. I hope you will see I am efficient. but being your FO I would hope for a little more respect on your part in the future'
Ko'Vor swiftly turns and glides out of the room muttering to himself. Caspian is left wondering how long the klingon will go without making his own views clear. In whatever ways klingons do that.

"Now, I'm sure we all understand where we stand. Captain Kirk, it has been enlightening to speak with you but I am afraid I must speak to my First Officer now so if you wouldn't mind?"
Kirk did not know what to say, he had never been talk to like this before even by an Admiral. He figured the best thing to do was to ride out the storm and make sure to always stand up to the man. Sooner or later he will crack, Kirk thought.
"Indeed, well remember next time you wish to enter my office please ring the chime, or at least knock." Malachi turned towards Ko'Vor not giving Kirk a chance to respond.
"Not a chance." Kirk said leaving the room.
Walking down the stairs from the Captain's Office Kirk spotted Lt. Commander McLean. They two men nodded as Kirk kept on going until he reached the turbo lift.
"Smug son of a..." Kirk said as the turbo lift doors closed cutting off his last words.

You will do your duty as I have instructed you to do so, if you can not or will not do that then I can easily find a Starfleet replacement." He was angry now, more so than he would normally allow himself.
"Fine. I will do my duty for now. I hope you will see I am efficient, but being your FO I would hope for a little more respect on your part in the future."
Malachi ignored him and the Klingon Commander exited the office. Caspian took a long swig of tea and frowned. This was going to be hard work.
He walked out onto Command.
"Status Report from all Stations." He barked.

'Ko'Vor to Caspian' Ko'vor waits for a response. there isn’t one. he tries again, and again fails to get a response. tapping his com badge to check it is actually working he finds that it is so concludes that the captain is still ignoring him. 'computer open a channel to the command deck, all speakers' 'channel open' the computer confirmed. 'this is Ko'Vor I decided as I wasn’t being answered on the com I would use a more...direct method. I have finished overseeing the loading of the freight vessel. I have also confiscated some items that could be a security risk, the crew seem happy to leave without them.'
Ko'Vor waited, still hoping for a response. or maybe thanks for his job well done. carrying on he said;
'They now need clearance to leave the station, I trust you can handle that from up there or do you need my help with that simple job too?' He chuckled to himself, hoping the captain realised he could give as good or even better than he got. 'the lack of response I take as a silent conformation. Still, I will be on my way up there to hold your hand through the procedures if you wish, sir?' a short crackle came from the other end of the com, a response then came through
<tag: Caspian>
'very well sir, if I’m needed I will be in my office, you can alert me there. maybe there is a quantum pipe I can clean? HA. HA. HA.’ then more bluntly he ordered ‘computer close channel' 'channel closed' the computer echoed.

The Captain had returned in a fowl mood. He was angry at something or at someone. Lorian thought he knew the reason, but decided not to say anything. It was not his place to do so.
Lorian just got up from the captain's chair and went on working making sure that the entail department reports had been done. To his surprise they had. I'm going to like my staff Lorian thought. Something that till now had eluded him, a hard working staff that did everything on time.
After making sure that everything was done on the Darkhawk, Lorian made his way into DSB. It was a beautiful station and Lorian couldn't help but awe as he first stepped onto its floors.
"Welcome to Deep Space Beta, Commander," a young ensign said. Lorian knew that she hated what she was doing. She had not signed up for Starfleet to greet people as the came into a starbase. Lorian pitted her.
"Thank you ensign," Lorian said as he walked off. He needed to talk to the First officer of the base, a Klingon named Ko'vor.
"Computer located Commander Ko'vor."
"Commander Ko'vor is in Captain's Caspain office."
"d**n," Lorian said out loud. He knew that some of these meetings could take hours. Especially if the Captain was prick who took everything to seriously.
"Computer leave a message at Commander Ko'vor's office telling him that I would like to have a meeting at his most convenience.
"Understood." Lorian quickly realized that he wouldnt' get much things done right now so he headed back towards the Darkhawk and told himself that he would find work to do.
